Thursday Island is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Island region. The island has an area of about 3.5km2. At the 2016 census; Thursday Island had a population of 2900.

Thursday Island Hospital is the referral hospital for seventeen Primary Health Care Centres in the Torres Strait Islands. These are grouped in island clusters as follows:
